Logo of the University of Hamburg made of 21 magnetic atoms on a nonmagnetic surfaceBased on our internationally recognized research activities in the rapidly evolving inter-disciplinary field of Nano-Spintronics, we establish a Cluster of Excellence comprising research groups from the Departments of Physics, Chemistry, Informatics, and Mathematics at Hamburg University and from two Helmholtz Centers, DESY and GKSS. The focus is on curiosity-driven basic research in the three areas of metal-, semiconductor-, and molecular/atomic-based spintronics with the visionary goal of developing nanoscale spintronic devices based on a detailed knowledge of the underlying atomistic spin-dependent interactions and processes. Within the framework of our Cluster, we will particular emphasis on innovative strategies to promote excellent students and young researchers as well as equal opportunity careers.
