Investigation of Organic Molecules on Metal Substrates using LT-STM Manipulation

Single molecules and monolayers of Hexabenzocoronene, Hexaphenyl-benzene , the so called Lander, and derivatives thereof are investigated on Cu single crystal surfaces. STM-manipulation can be combined with intermolecular and molecule-substrate interactions. By this means I will show the formation of molecular ordered islands, the trapping and moving of Cu adatoms with molecules, the contacting of a molecule to a mono-atomic step edge, and the assembly of a molecular pinion and rack device. In the second part of the talk I will introduce the IBM nanostencil. This is a tool for resistless lithography based on the shadow-mask technique and for in situ structure analysis by means of STM/AFM. It allows the direct patterning of complex nm-sized structures composed of a wide range of materials in UHV. A short overview of recent results obtained with this technique will be given.
