Rozsa (University of Budapest): Atomistic simulations of non-collinear spin configurations in ultrathin filmsIn the last few years, spin-polarized scanning tunnelling microscopy experiments have revealed special real space spin configurations, such as spin spirals and skyrmion lattices, in several mono- and double-layer magnetic films deposited on nonmagnetic substrates. We study
these systems by using a spin model Hamiltonian with interactions
determined from ab initio calculations. By comparing the results of spin dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations to theoretical calculations, we construct the phase diagram of the ultrathin film systems. Different spin spiral phases are identified in Fe/Ta(110). In Pd/Fe/Ir(111), besides the long-range-ordered spin spiral and skyrmion lattice phases, a strongly fluctuating phase is present at higher temperature, which is characterized
by a finite skyrmion lifetime.
