Controlling spins in adsorbed molecules by a chemical switch
Herein we present a unique approach to reversibly control between the on and off state of the spin of an organometallic molecule coupled to a ferromagnetic substrate by a chemical switch. Such an degree of control was achieved via coordination of the central metal ion of the organometallic molecule with an external ligand which is further discussed based on more recent data providing insight into the mechanism. In this work, the mechanism used for regulation of the oxygen affinity in hemoglobin by iron-porphyrin in nature has been used as a design-concept to perform the switching event of molecular spins. The use of external stimuli to control single molecular spins at magnetic-interfaces is of potential interest for spintronics and quantum information.
